Norway – Lofoten to Alesund

After a whole night of Northern Lights hunting, we only had 4.5 hours of sleep and needed to head to the airport for our flight to Bodo to Bergen to Alesund. The morning was beautiful and clear sky! We had one last view of the picturesque Hamnøy, the icon of Lofotens!

Getting to Leknes only take an hour so we had time to spot along the way for photos if we want to.

I couldn’t believe that we were at Ramberg Beach just 5 hours ago!

Double rainbows mean good luck!

Beautiful scenery on a beautiful clear day!

At low tide:

The road to Nusjford again!

Continued to Leknes and more fall scenery along the way:

Leknes Airport was super small so it was fast to return the car (key drop) and check-in. The view from the flight to Bodo, a look at the Lofoten Islands from above:

After the 3 flights, we landed at Alesund at 6:30 PM and it was raining….sigh the rain followed us! We took the airport bus (its schedule aligns with the flight arrival times), right outside the exit of the airport and there were only 3 passengers including us. The price was 155 NOK (around $14 USD) per person per way, expensive but still cheaper than Uber and taxi. We stopped at the city center stop and walked 5 minutes to the hotel, Hotel 1904. It was rainy but thankfully not pouring. After we checked-in, we walked out for dinner at a Thai restaurant called SOI ONE Ålesund. The restaurant looked more like a lounge and self-served. There was not even water served, what!!! My phone data was too slow to load and order online so I walked to the counter to place the orders there. I ordered the Kaprow with rice and it was super spicy!!! I never had a dish this spicy before at any Thai restaurants, not even in Thailand!!!! I can eat pretty spicy food (think of Szechuan spicy) and this to me was the 5 peppers level spicy! I couldn’t imagine how many Norwegians could take this level of spiciness! Luckily, Jason’s backpack had a bottle of water and that was a lifesaver for me to finish the plate.

Jason ordered the stir-fried beef with peppers, it was mildly spicy but the beef was dry.

We didn’t enjoy our meal because of the quality wasn’t great and no water was served! After dinner, we stopped by a convenient store to get drinks and then walked back to the hotel. Our hotel room was weird….why in the world they put a chair under that corner???

It was awkward!

The room decors were very Norwegian which reminded me of our cabin on the Hurtigruten cruise to Antarctica.

The bathroom was spacious but why they installed such a small sink??? It was super awkward to wash my face! Whoever designed the rooms in this hotel failed at Human Factors course!!!

We didn’t have much sleep the night before so we slept in a bit. Breakfast was included and it was okay with fresh pastries.

The weather was gloomy and rainy but we still managed to do a little sightseeing to check out its beautiful old town full with Art Nouveau architecture. It was Sunday so most if not all of the shops were closed and it was very quiet.

For lunch, Jason found a Chinese buffet called Long Cheng Restaurant, the variety and quality were meh.

After lunch, we walked out to the waterfront and took some photos.

I asked Jason if he wanted to hike up for the panoramic view…..hiking during the rain? Urg….

I convinced him to go hahahaha!!! The trailhead was inside a park, the sign wsa misleading so we asked a local for directions.

It was mostly stairs and the number of the steps were marked. The views got better and better:

Postcard view!

The first viewpoint was at around 115 steps.

Around half way was the observation deck. The rain got heavier so we turned back, FYI there were a total of 416 steps up to the restaurant Fjellstua.

More photos taken from my cellphone of the Art Nouveau town.

We were soaked when we got back to our hotel! The weather remained bad so we just stayed in our room to rest. For dinner, we went to Namaste Indian Tandoori. The dishes were much better and we enjoyed our last meal in Norway!

This was the garlic shrimps:

Our 7 nights in Norway came to an end, it was a great adventurous trip from hiking to Northern Lights hunting. Alesund is beautiful but too bad the weather didn’t cooperate on our short stay. I totally recommend Lofoten Islands even though it was time-consuming to get to!

  1. I guess your 2nd aurora night did not work out.We got rained on in Alesund on the Hurtigruten cruise and did the climb. The train ride from Bergen to Oslo is quite enjoyable and Oslo has some interesting sights. Many of the hurtigruten stops are quick with little to see,but definetly some nice photo ops.Taxi prices in Norway r outrageous ,so all my plans avoided the taxis.Taxi fare was 40.00 per mile and a preordered ride started at 300.00,but i just took another cab.
